I didn’t realise that Donaldson’s School for the Deaf was sitting empty. Hopefully they’ll find a good use for the building. I’m aware of plenty of other listed buildings in Edinburgh that are in a state of disrepair; Lauriston Place Church is one that comes to mind. It’s looking pretty sad if not rather atmospheric at the moment. It looks like it ought to be home to some pathetic vampire in an Anne Rice story or be used as a special building for wizards in Harry Potter. It’s a pity that reality is more prosaic than that.

More on the archeological find in St. Andrews.
This is very cool, although I’m not that surprised.
If you’re a Arthur Conan Doyle fan or a Sherlock Holmes fan, please consider signing the e-petition appealing to the government to buy Undershaw, Arthur Conan Doyle’s Surrey home. The plan is to save this unique building and create a Conan Doyle Museum.

Interesting stuff, although I do feel sorry for the mummified cat.
It’s sod’s law that this happens after I’ve left Edinburgh. Oh well!
A tax break would certainly be good. It’s hard to know what to do right now. Digital publishing is a wonderful new thing but the more traditional publishing houses are going to have to seriously rethink the way they deal with authors. I understand that a lot of publishing houses are being squeezed financially but at the same time they can’t expect new authors to have to crawl and beg to get a contract, only to find they’re getting paid less than a month’s wages once they actually get published. I don’t know many people who can write a full length novel in a month, especially if they’re also having to work a day job to support themselves. If you work it out in hours the pay is way below the minimum wage. Something needs to happen!

Just discovered Google Books. I’m in love! Take a look, there’s all kinds of beautiful stuff there to read. I love being able to see the scans of the original books too and the engravings and things that go with it. Fabulous stuff!
