A tax break would certainly be good. It’s hard to know what to do right now. Digital publishing is a wonderful new thing but the more traditional publishing houses are going to have to seriously rethink the way they deal with authors. I understand that a lot of publishing houses are being squeezed financially but at the same time they can’t expect new authors to have to crawl and beg to get a contract, only to find they’re getting paid less than a month’s wages once they actually get published. I don’t know many people who can write a full length novel in a month, especially if they’re also having to work a day job to support themselves. If you work it out in hours the pay is way below the minimum wage. Something needs to happen!
